Luke Fickell and the University of Wisconsin football program have identified a new defensive tackle of interest in the transfer portal.

Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports reported that the Badgers are in the mix for Wyoming defensive lineman Gavin Meyer. Illinois is also involved, plus USC and Cal have already lined up visits for the former Cowboy.

According to the composite rankings, Meyer was rated as the No. 1,971 player in the 2020 recruiting class and the No. 15 player in Wisconsin. He will have one year of eligibility remaining at his next destination.

Wisconsin Football Eyeing Transfer NT With In-State Ties

During spring practice, it became evident that the Wisconsin football team required more depth on the defensive line, both in terms of sheer numbers and the lack of proven talent. This necessity arose due to the departure of depth pieces TJ Bollers and Mike Jarvis to the transfer portal, underlining the Badgers’ need to bolster their defensive front.

Enter Gavin Meyer, who has played in 26 games over the last two seasons. The 6-foot-4, 284-pound nose tackle posted 66 tackles, 49 pressures, 8.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, and a forced fumble during that span. In 2023, Meyer had 26 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss as a senior.

Meyer, a Wisconsin native, earned a 78.4 defensive grade from Pro Football Focus and also had a 77.9 grade as a run-defender, both of which are considered high-quality by their grading metric.

Ideally, the Wisconsin football team would love to add someone who could immediately slot into the top group and provide snaps along with James Thompson Jr., Curt Neal, Ben Barten, and Elijah Hills this fall.

Let’s hope the in-state ties hold enough weight to garner a visit with the Badgers, who are also involved with Alabama’s Khurtiss Perry and Grand Valley State transfer Jay’Viar Suggs in the portal.
